History of our Church
Two missions were established along the banks of the lower Colorado in 1780. The first mission was La Purisima Concepcion de Maria Santisima, founded by Fr. Garces and only lasted 271 days from October 20 1780 to July 17, 1781. The sister mission and pueblo of San Pedro y San Pablo had a shorter life from January 7th to July 17, 1781. became a U.S. military outpost in the 19th century and was revived as an active mission again in 1919. The current church, St. Thomas Indian Mission, was built in 1922 and dedicated in 1923. Today, the mission is San Diego’s eastern-most parish.
